I am going to be writing about three different scientific experiements that have been conducted using animals.
Mice and chickens VS breast cancer.
There have been research been done of the causes of cancer on the studies of mice and chickens. This research was possible when investigators was planting tumours from one animal to other (same animal). In 1911, they prepared an extract from a sarcoma of a Plymouth Rock hen that had a large tumour growing on its breast. Small pieces of the tumour into healthy chickens of the same species. The chickens had formed tumours of the same type as the first chicken. They found the tumours could be transferred without the use of intact cells, but with a cell-free filtrate that eliminated any bacteria. The tumours were caused by a filterable agent, the term used at that time to describe viruses. The cancer was not caused by an infectious agent, and scientists considered the bird tumours an except that occurred only in chickens.
Mice VS Childhood leukaemia
The most common form of childhood cancer, occurs when white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow of the person, which reproduced uncontrollably (so it produces when it wants to. There are big numbers of immature white blood cells that doesn't go with the development and functioning of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Close to world war II, the only available treatments for cancer were surgery and irradiation. The treatments were little for the type of cancer it was. The cancer cells are dispersed in organs and blood throughout the body. The treatment with drugs and chemical compounds that were effective against other diseases had not yet been shown to be helpful in cancer.
Nim - chimpanzee
In the 1970’s a chimpanzee called Nim Chimpsky took part in Columbia university search study called ‘project Nim’. It was lead by a psychologist at Columbia who was attempting to find out if a chimpanzee could learn how to communicate using American sign language. Nim was in a world where he was taught sign language in the same way, a human was. He was brought to a family in new york city in 1973, a few days after he was born. Later on Nim learned about 125 signs. There was a video tracking most of his teacher’s signs, imitating them but he almost never made a sign (by myself). At the same time he was with his own family learning how to be chimp. It was said one of the best things about him was we was able to understand humans better than any other chimp. After a year he was sold to medical lab for tuberculosis. He appeared on Sesame street. He than lived out the rest of his days in Cleveland Amory’s black beauty ranch, an animal sanctuary in Texas. He died in the year 2000, at the age 26 from a heart attack.
