For the this first question we had to research how chickens should be treated to how the Australian code is. We will need to make sure as a class the chickens will have access to food and fresh water everyday. We will need to change the size of bowls as they are older, as they have a small ones at the moment so they don't fall in and die. We will also make sure the chickens are drinking enough water, so they don't get dehydrated. Together we will need to check all of the chickens everyday twice, to see if they are okay also to see if the water or food needs changing or more to be added. Also we will need to check the heater and light are working to what they are ment to and the temperature is right so it is giving as much warmth for the chickens for there needs. We might need to make signs around the chicken pen saying not to touch or speak loudly around them as the chickens will get scared and distress from what is happening around them. For the time we have the chickens will we need to change the pen a few times, as it will start to smell and get really dirty. Also need to make sure the area they are in is safe and nothing could or would happen to them when we aren't there.
When we are working with the chickens we will need to make sure that we are watching them at all times and not leaving them unattended. We need to make sure we are supporting the wellbeing of the animals, try to avoid harm which includes pain and distress and applying to high standards of scientific integrity. When the chickens are handled we should be carrying them by holding them at the bottom and putting your hand over the top of them, so then they wont jump and move around. Also supporting them so they aren't distress or scared.
The information I have just listed, is linked to the Australian code to what we need to follow. The purpose of the Australian code it is to promote the ethical and moral ways and responsible care and use of animals for scientific purposes. The obligation has the responsibility to make sure that the care and use of the chickens for the scientific purposes is ethically acceptable, the effects on the well-being of the animals involved by potential benefits to humans, animals or the environment. The planning of care and the use of animals must support and the animal well-being. We should avoid taking steps of adverse impacts, Including supporting the animals well-being, Avoiding harm, including pain and distress, Monitor animals and take appropriate action, set intervention points and take appropriate action, Set intervention and experimental humane endpoints.
